Rising Sun opened the Little League Maryland District 5 junior softball tournament with a 28-1 triumph over Havre de Grace in five innings Monday night at Eder Park. Rising Sun made a nice defensive play to end the top of the first. Left fielder Taylor Mantyk caught a fly ball and then threw home to catcher Madison Cooper to nail a runner at the plate who had tagged up from third.
Rising Sun then scored seven runs in the first without benefit of a hit. Ingrid Miller, Madison Cooper, Cassidy Hayden, and winning pitcher Madison Perry each drew a bases-loaded walk and two runs scored on an error. In the third, Miller delivered an RBI hit and Madison Cooper contributed a two-run single as Rising Sun upped its lead to 11-0. After Havre de Grace scored in the top of the fourth, Rising Sun responded with 17 runs in the home half highlighted by a grand slam by Madison Cooper, who finished with seven RBIs in the game. Alyssa Paulette, Hannah Martin, Taylore Brown, and Mantyk each had an RBI hit. Mantyk and Kahlie Kilgore both drove in a run with a ground out. Cooper capped the scoring with a bases-loaded blast over the head of the right fielder. Rising Sun advances to face Elkton Tuesday night at 6. There are three teams in the tournament. Prior to the game, Elkton Little League and district administrator Martin Thompson paid tribute to longtime volunteer Sharon Arbour. This is the last All-Star tournament Arbour will run, but she will remain a district volunteer. Comments are closed.
