Rising Sun gained the upper hand in the District 5 Little League baseball tournament with a 6-3 triumph over Elkton Sunday evening in Rising Sun. Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Elkton made things interesting despite making the first out at home plate on a laser throw from Rising Sun left fielder AJ Peterson.
With Rising Sun ahead 6-3, Elkton loaded the bases with two outs before Rising Sun reliever Hayden Spioch fanned the final hitter. Spioch was the third Rising Sun pitcher of the day. Starter Owen Scott pitched 4 2/3 innings before Lane Weismiller got the final out of the fifth and tossed a scoreless sixth with help from another outstanding defensive play by Rising Sun. With two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth, Mason Williams slapped a would-be single to center but Rising Sun center fielder Daniel Tserkis fielded the ball on a hop and came up firing to second base for a force to prevent at least one run from scoring. Rising Sun, the lone undefeated team remaining in the tournament, moves on to the championship round Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. In Sunday's key victory, Rising Sun scored three runs in the first and never trailed. Evan Slaybaugh led off with a line single to right and Jackson Stickney walked. After an out, Weismiller hit a slow bouncer to first. Slaybaugh scored and Weismiller reached on an error. Another error on a ball hit by Jackson Sowers made it 2-0. Owen Scott recorded a hit to load the bases when his smash to first could not be handled. Spioch was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Elkton got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Nick Blankenship. In the top of the third, Peterson belted a two-run homer to right-center to expand Rising Sun's lead to 5-1. Elkton made it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth and threatened to get more before Tserkis' throw ended the inning. Rising Sun added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Sowers. Sowers hit a rocket shot off the scoreboard in right-center, the only place in the ballpark where he would not have had a homer. Comments are closed.
