Rising Sun field hockey team is working to narrow the gap with some of the region's perennial powers. The Tigers finished 9-5 last season but lost 8-0 to Hereford in the region final for the second straight season. Rising Sun lost five starters to graduation but has a solid nucleus back. Senior Megan Keene and junior Daija Krygier will lead the midfield. "They are both skilled players who will provide leadership," coach Katie Keyes said. "Megan is more vocal and Daija leads by example." Freshman Elizabeth Hurm, senior Macey Coale, and senior Brooke Ratledge are expected to help in the midfield. Ratledge could also see action at forward. Senior Lorrie Bowman is the most experienced Tiger forward. Taylor Knight and Meaghan Szkalak both saw varsity action last year. Rising Sun is also counting on junior Cayley Hall, who played JV last year. Forward Autumn Russell joined the field hockey team after spending three seasons with the cross country squad. "The forwards are looking pretty good," Keyes said. "Taylor and Meaghan have been working well together as the inners and Cayley has been looking good at left wing which is one of the toughest positions to play." Senior Kelsey Perkins will anchor the defense with help from juniors Lexi Seaver and Sam Keene. Junior Katy Wagner and senior Jaymee McDowell are also vying for time. Rising Sun will be inexperienced in the cage. Lexie Barclay is slated to start and freshman Madison Cooper and sophomore Kylie McCurry are in the mix. Keyes has been happy by her team's progress. "I definitely think they're doing a nice job," she said. "We're focusing on the basics and I think our vision is better than it was last year at this point in the season." The coach says the program is growing and starting to develop an identity. "We're improving every year," said Keyes. "We've been talking a lot about bringing 'our' game. What is it that Rising Sun field hockey is known for? We want our game to be consistency and beating other teams to the ball, being aggressive, and being relentless." Comments are closed.
