The Rising Sun boys basketball team has a new coach but returns three starters. Don Passenant was promoted to varsity head coach after Matt Haack moved back to his home state of Michigan. It should be a smooth transition since Passenant is familiar with players, having coached most of them on the JV squad. Jesse Shields returns at point guard to provide the Tigers with an experienced ball-handler. "Jesse has worked hard on his game," said Passenant.
Junior Noah Juergens and sophomore Casey Baker are up from JV and are both capable of running the point. "I feel very comfortable with our ball-handling, probably for the first time in a while," said Passenant. Returning starter Brennan Martz, a tough defender, will be the Tigers’ shooting guard. Starting center Kevin Alkinburg is back to provide size (6-6), shot blocking, and a nice touch. Junior Will Farrington, who was impressive after coming up from JV during last season, will be a key contributor. Passenant says he is comfortable with the Tigers' depth and balance. "That's our strong point," he said. "They know how to share the ball, play together, and hustle." Swingman Jordan Edwards and reserve center Kyle Andersen have varsity experience. Bryce Brown and Jacob Keene are up from the JV and forward Kohl Ford and guard Zac Palmer will contribute. "I like the fact that all the guys have played together at one time or another and I've coached them on the JV," Passenant said. "They know what to expect." For his part, Passenant expects the Tigers to be competitive. "There are a lot of athletic teams," he said. "We're probably not as athletic as some of the best teams but I'm seeing more athleticism on the JV team (which also has eight players over 6-feet tall). We'll make up for it with hard work and hustle." Comments are closed.
