Don Passenant expects to see improvement and some more wins in his second year as Rising Sun boys basketball coach. The Tigers won just six games last season but several of those victories were significant. Rising Sun defeated rivals Elkton and Perryville and a solid Harford Tech squad and also posted a playoff win over North East. The Tigers lost five players to graduation including starters Kevin Alkinburg and Brennan Martz but return a solid nucleus.
Passenant will rely heavily on two seniors, guard Noah Juergens and forward Will Farrington. Juergens will handle the ball along with Casey Baker. Farrington is expected to supply a big boost to the offense. "I've coached Will for four years (including two on JV)," said Passenant. "He can play the 5 (center) or 4 (power forward) and possibly even the 3 (small forward). He played a lot over the summer and has really improved. He can shoot the ball and drive to the basket." Curtis Cox, a 6-5 center, provides a presence in the paint. Rising Sun has depth at guard with Bryce Brown and Zac Palmer, who can both also play small forward. Guard Cameron Altland is up from JV. Guard/forward Andrew Noel is inexperienced but a quick learner, the coach said. Passenant is counting on forward Jake Keane. Forward David Moore and forward/center Austin Newby played JV last season. I feel good about this group," Passenant said. "I'm looking forward to it. I want to be competitive against everyone and definitely improve on our record." To accomplish that, Rising Sun's offense must be more efficient. "We've got to have less turnovers and better shooting," Passenant said. "Turnovers and shooting killed us last year. We have to improve our offense." Comments are closed.
