Kaytlen "Texas" Nugent made a crucial steal and then hit the go-ahead basket to help the Rising Sun girls basketball team upended visiting Edgewood 30-27 Monday night, February 1. Trailing 23-15 early in the fourth quarter, the Tigers tallied nine straight points. After baskets by Abby Mack and Maddie Foard, Lexi Osborne buried a corner three and Paige Bradford scored to put Rising Sun ahead with 3:40 remaining. Edgewood regained the lead on a Breanna Humbles basket before Nugent hit a corner jumper at the shot clock buzzer. Humbles made two free throws with 2:01 left to give the Rams a 27-26 edge and Edgewood got the ball back following a Tiger turnover with 46 seconds left. Nugent stole an Edgewood pass with 35 seconds left and, 14 seconds later, knocked down a jumper from just inside the three-point arc to put Rising Sun ahead 28-27. "Honestly, the only thing going through my head was I had to put the shot in the basket," said Nugent, who came to Rising Sun from Texas two years ago. After the Tiger defense stymied Humbles on a drive, Paige Bradford drew an intentional foul and sank both free throws to make it 30-27 with nine ticks to go and Rising Sun maintaining possession. The Tigers were whistled for a lane violation while attempting the front end of a one-and-one with seven seconds left to go. Edgewood tried for a long inbounds pass but the ball went out of bounds without anyone touching it, giving Rising Sun the ball under its own basket. The Tigers turned it right back over, presenting the Rams with one final chance needing to go the length of the court. Edgewood came up short on a potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer. Abby Mack led Rising Sun with nine points and 14 rebounds. The Rams' Humbles had 10 of her 20 points in the first quarter as Edgewood jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Down 15-4, Rising Sun scored the last nine points of the second quarter to get back into the game. "They were quick. We usually have trouble with quick teams," Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt said. "Number 24 (Humbles) was great in the first quarter. We adjusted our defense. The girls buckled down and did what we needed to do to win. I was proud of Texas at the end, coming up with those two big plays, the steal and then the basket. It was great to see her do that. Maddie Foard gave us a huge spark again."
