It seems impossible. Yet it happened. Incredibly, the Rising Sun wrestling team won both matches of a double-dual meet by the exact same razor-thin margin. The Tigers topped both Elkton and North East 40-39 in matches both decided by criteria "h".
Both matches ended tied at 39. Both outcomes were decided by the eighth tiebreaking criteria which reads, "the team having the greater number (total match points) of first point(s) shall be declared the winner." Wait. It gets even more eerie. In both matches, Rising Sun outscored its opponents 10-8 in criteria "h" points. Astonishing. But true. Rising Sun coach Cory Hall has been competing or coaching for 24 years and can only recall one other match he was involved in ending in a tie. While it's not typically that farfetched for a dual meet to end in a tie, it's hard to fathom the odds of the same team having two tied matches on the same night with them both decided by the eighth criteria. The win over North East reminded Hall of the days when it was one of the best rivalries around. "The match with North East was exciting and brought back so many memories of the barnburner rivalries that we grew up competing in," he said. "I guarantee that this night will be a memory that all who were there and participated in it will remember for their lifetime." Noah Ulrich (126) and Jack Lough (132) each won by fall to stake Rising Sun to a 12-0 lead. North East prevailed in four straight bouts to go in front 24-12. Chris Hanna (145) and Colin Beck (160) each posted a pin and Marshall Johnston (138) and Tanner Moretz (152) both received a forfeit. Rising Sun responded with a four-match win streak of its own. Sean Glynn (170) triumphed by fall, Mason Hoag (182) received a forfeit, Max Foppiano (195) won 8-1, and Taylor Cimorosi (220) accepted a forfeit. The Tigers led 33-24 with four bouts to go. Indians' heavyweight won by fall before the Tigers' Matt Childs (106) also posted a pin. North East won the final two bouts to tie the score. Collin Day (113) scored a pin and Tyler Miller (120) triumphed by decision. The Rising Sun-Elkton match wound up tied at 39 when the Tigers' Jon Price (106)received a forfeit in the final scheduled bout. Josh Wassin (120), Lough, and Hoag each won by fall for the Tigers. Childs (113) won a 6-2 decision. Ulrich and Foppiano each received a forfeit. The Tigers' Tyler Jones (170) wound up getting pinned in the third period. He did, however score a takedown for the first points of the match. At the time, no one knew just how important that would turn out to be. North East defeated Elkton 60-21 in the middle match.
