Who says nobody's perfect? The Rising Sun volleyball team has been so far. The Tigers completed a second straight undefeated regular season with a sweep of host Bel Air Wednesday night. Rising Sun swept all 14 of its matches, a perfect 52-0 in sets. The Tigers also did not drop a set in winning the Bulldog Classic Invitational. "It's crazy," senior Erin Harkey said. "I never thought I would being undefeated would be a thing for me being on a team. I think it's really awesome. Coach trains us well for the competition we have." The Chesapeake Division champion Tigers downed the Bobcats 25-15, 25-19, 25-15. Breanne Haley had a team-high nine kills. Mackenzie Blevins added eight, Anna Prodoehl provided seven, and Lacey Swartout supplied five. Blevins served five aces and Prodoehl and Swartout each notched four. Sarah Williams handed out 26 assists. After finishing the regular season undefeated last year and then winning the region title, the Tigers suffered a lopsided three-set loss to Poolesville in the state semifinals. Harkey says there is a difference between this year's team and last season's. "We've bonded more this season," she said. "I feel like we have a stronger connection. We've uplifted each other which makes us play better. And I feel like we have a lot of strong players on our team." Although happy for his players, Rising Sun coach Rich Wilson wishes his team could have played a tougher schedule. The Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference requires each school to play twice against foes in its division. '"(Being undefeated) means more to the kids than it means to me," Wilson said. "I've said this many times. To go undefeated just means we haven't scheduled correctly. Of course, because of the UCBAC we can't. The (Bel Air coach) would tell you the same thing. We need to be playing different teams. Until we can break up this home and home thing with UCBAC, play once against teams then give us the freedom to play other teams. I'd play Bel Air twice. There's no reason not to. But some of the other teams don't want to play us. They don't get any playing time (when the matches go three sets) … We'd like to be playing a more competitive schedule and then we'd be able to develop a lot faster than we have been." Wilson is proud of his squad, which he says has been especially enjoyable to coach. He called winning every set "mind-boggling". "And we managed to play at a relatively consistent level," he said. "The girls have managed to do all this and stay focused which bodes well for the future." Rising Sun 3, North Harford 0 The Tigers topped the Hawks 25-4, 25-13, 25-8 Monday, October 20. Haley recorded a team-high nine kills and Prodoehl, Blevins, and Maddy Eckerd each added four. Blevins blasted 12 aces. Comments are closed.
