Rising Sun's patient approach at the plate paid off in a big way. The result was an 11-5 victory over Elkton to capture the 10-11 baseball District 5 title Friday night in Chesapeake City. Down 4-2, Rising Sun rallied for seven runs in the fourth inning after starting with two outs and nobody on base against Elkton's John Cherwaty and his nasty curveball.
Daniel Tserkis ignited the uprising with a line single to right. Owen Scott hit an infield single between the mound and third base and Tserkis scored on an errant throw. Cherwaty, who came on in the second inning, reached his pitch count limit, having thrown 86 pitches in 2 2/3 innings against the mature, well-schooled Rising Sun team. AJ Peterson greeted the new hurler with a game-tying RBI double to deep center. Lane Weismiller then gave Rising Sun the lead for good with an RBI triple over the head of the charging right fielder. Rising Sun wasn't finished yet. Jarrett Price walked and Austin McGrady roped a two-run double into the left field corner to make it 7-4. Josh Price hit a bloop RBI single to right and Jackson Stickney smacked an RBI single to center to up the advantage to 9-4. That was enough for Rising Sun starter Owen Scott. Just like in his first appearance against Elkton, Scott struggled some early before taking control. He got out of the fifth inning when birthday boy Jackson Sowers caught a line drive and tagged first base for a double play. In the home half, Jarrett Price drove in a run with a single and another run scored on a wild pitch to lengthen Rising Sun's lead to 11-4. Elkton scored a run in the sixth and had runners on first and second with two outs when Scott reached his pitch count limit and was replaced by Peterson. Peterson needed just one pitch, getting the final out on a fly ball to center. Elkton needed two straight wins over undefeated Rising Sun to win the title. For the first three innings, they seemed to be in position to force a decisive game. Gannon Williams and Aidan Pressler led off the game with singles and eventually came around to score. Up 2-0, Elkton doubled its lead in the second. Rising Sun sliced the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Jarrett Price bounced a single to center and McGrady followed with a line drive hit. Both scored on a couple of wild pitches. Rising Sun right fielder Hayden Spioch gunned down a runner at the plate in the top of the third. Cherwaty recorded consecutive strikeouts to wriggle out of a bases load jam in the bottom half. Rising Sun, its roster comprised by many of the same players who won the 9-10 district title last summer, will begin state tournament play July 18 at Arbutus Little League. Comments are closed.
