If the Rising Sun Little League Major Division All-Stars baseball team is going to win a state championship, it will have to do so the same way the nucleus of the squad took the 10-11 title last summer. Just like last season, Rising Sun dropped the first game of the tournament, falling 6-2 to Delmar Saturday in Easton. A disastrous third inning did in Rising Sun. Rising Sun scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning against Delmar starter Khalik Beasley. Mason Craig drew a one-out walk. With two outs, Sam Hogue struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt. The Delmar catcher was slow to react allowing Hogue to reach safely with Craig advancing to second. That brought Jason Mock to the plate. Mock hit a hard one-hopper through the hole and both runners scored when the ball scooted past the left fielder. It didn't take long for Delmar to slice the lead in half. Luke Waters doubled to center and scored on a Beasley single. Beasley was trapped off first after a strikeout and tagged out after a rundown but Rising Sun was called for obstruction. Hogue got out of trouble by fanning the next two hitters. After Rising Sun went down in order, Hogue also put up a zero in the bottom half with help of a double play he started. Rising Sun threatened in the top of the third. Craig doubled to right-center with one out. After an out. he moved to third on a passed ball. Hogue hit the ball hard in the hole but the Delmar shortstop Waters made a nice backhand stop and threw to first for the out. In the decisive bottom of the third, Gavin Roystuart led off with an infield hit and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. Waters struck out on a ball in the dirt. The Rising Sun catcher ran after Waters while the Roystuart took off for third. The throw to third was off target, enabling Roystuart to score the tying run and Waters wound up on third. Beasley delivered another RBI single to put Delmar in front for good. After Dylan Pasta singled, another run scored on a Rising Sun error following a strikeout. Delmar made it 5-2 when a Gabe Rincon line drive to the outfield was not caught. Mock notched his second hit of the game to start the top of the fourth. After a strikeout, Garrett Southern came on to relieve Beasley. He struck out the first batter he faced before issuing a two-out walk to Ethan Gullion. The next batter struck out to end the inning. Rising Sun removed Hogue so he would be able to come back in the tournament sooner and Ethan Pierce worked around two walks to hurl a scoreless frame. Delmar, considered the favorite to win the state title, made it 6-2 in the fifth when Pasta blasted a home run over the gazebo beyond the right-center field fence. Pasta pitched the sixth, giving up a two-out single to right by Joey Trout and recording two strikeouts. Rising Sun returns to action Monday at 5:30. Comments are closed.
