The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball team stayed live in the state tournament with a 7-4 triumph over Conococheague Wednesday night in Arbutus. Trailing 4-3, Rising Sun rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth – all coming with two outs. Daniel Tserkis ignited the uprising by fisting a single to center. With Tserkis on second and two outs, AJ Peterson delivered a single to left. Tserkis was originally held at third but the throw home was wild and caromed off the fence in front of the third base dugout, enabling Tserkis to scamper home with the tying run.
Peterson advanced to second on the play and and Jarrett Price walked. Jackson Sowers plated the go-ahead run by bouncing a single up the middle and he and Price moved on a base on the throw to the plate. Josh Price followed with a bouncing single to center to lengthen the lead to 7-4. Rising Sun starter Evan Slaybaugh turned in a strong outing. He issued a one-out walk in the sixth and the next batter bunted for a hit. Conococheague loaded the bases on a bit of a strange play. The batter hit a little pop in front of the shortstop Lane Weismiller. The ball bounced and spun past Weismiller, who also had to deal with a baserunner beside him. With Slaybaugh reaching his pitch limit, Rising Sun turned to Seth Morris. Morris, making his first appearance on the hill in the postseason, struck out the next two hitters to seal the deal. Rising Sun had fallen behind on a two-run homer in the top of the first but responded with three runs in the home half. Jackson Stickney, Slaybaugh, and Tserkis each walked and Owen Scott walked to force in a run. Slaybaugh scored on a wild pitch and Peterson singled in a run. Conococheague tied it in the fourth on a controversial play as Rising Sun was called for obstruction after one of its players was bowled over while covering third. Conococheague took its first lead in the top of the fifth on a couple of hits and took bad bounces. Rising Sun advances to the championship round where they must beat undefeated Delmar twice to claim the state title. The first game is slated for Thursday night at 6. If Rising Sun prevails, the two teams will meet again Friday. Delmar defeated Rising Sun 8-5 on Tuesday. Comments are closed.
