Rising Sun girls soccer coach Dylan Aiman calls it the "Fallston curse" and vows the Tigers will one day have a remedy. That day was not Friday. The Cougars controlled the game from the start and went on to a 3-0 victory over the host Tigers in a region semifinal (section final) game.
"They outplayed us, outworked us," Aiman said. "They were the better team, no doubt…today." The Cougars took the lead midway through the first half. The Rising Sun goalie came out to the top of the box to clear the ball but the kick went straight to Fallston's Alicyn Lose. Lose lofted a shot into the goal from about 35 yards away. Five minutes later, Maribeth Esposito headed home a corner kick taken by Lose to make it 2-0. Rising Sun's best chance of the first half came in the 38th minute. Mikaela Berg moved down the right side and made a nice move to the inside past a Fallston defender, but her blasted sailed over the crossbar. Taylor Dudley added a goal to lengthen the lead to 3-0. The Tigers nearly got on the board but Jackie Barbon's shot caromed off the crossbar. It is the second time in three seasons Fallston has topped the Tigers in the region semifinals (section final). What can Rising Sun do to get to that level? "I just told the girls, We have to stay healthy," Aiman said. "They do this and then turn around and run and play club ball. So they come here and they're exhausted, they're tired, they're sore. I was down two players (injured starters Madison Webb and Kenze Stockslager) which would've made a huge difference. We have to improve our goalkeeping. But bottom line we have to stay healthy. I mean this would've been the year. There's no doubt. But when two of my starters are injured and not playing, I have another starter who could barely run, I had to take her out halfway through the game. I think a lot of that just has to do with overuse. They do too much. It hurts them on all sides on the club level and on the high school level. I really think club level is very important but during the high school season, you kind of got to lay off that a little bit to stay healthy." Rising Sun finishes the season with a 10-3-1 record and a runner-up finish to Aberdeen in the Susquehanna Division. "We had a great year," said Aiman. "I think we did great. I'm going to ask that they put us in the upper division next year. I don't know if they will or they won't. Graduating two seniors (Kellie Christie and Emily Ball). I've got a good freshman class coming in next year. I want to be up there. I want to play. We're going to break this Fallston curse." Comments are closed.
