The Rising Sun girls lacrosse team achieved something it hadn't done since its current coach, Becca Guethler, was a member of the squad. The Tigers topped visiting Perryville 11-5 last Thursday night, the first time in a decade that Rising Sun has defeated the Panthers. "It's a big accomplishment because it shows how hard we've worked throughout the season and how we've grown as a team and we've trusted each other," Rising Sun senior defender Jasmyne Moore said. "It's a big accomplishment." Rising Sun posted wins over its four county foes during the regular season. "We said at the beginning of the season we wanted a county sweep and we worked every day to get to where we are," said senior defender Emily Sowers. "We worked together as a team. This isn't a team full of individuals. We're all together as a family." Added Moore: "It's crazy. It's awesome and it's a great feeling. It's like all the hard work pays off." Rising Sun led 5-3 at halftime and Biz Hurm made it 6-3 with 21:10 remaining. That's when Perryville made its final push as Jordan Carr scored two goals just nine seconds apart to trim the deficit down to 6-5 with 17:38 left. The Tigers countered quickly. Kaitlyn Shivery won the ensuing draw and raced down the field to score a crucial goal. That started a string of five unanswered Rising Sun goals to end the game. Guethler acknowledged she was somewhat surprised by the lopsided result. "I think sometimes we have a tendency to lack hustle," she said. "We talked about that a lot in the last week or so and [against Perryville] they came out on fire. We had a lot of team building activities where I let them talk. I don't speak at all. Every single one of them talked about their intensity level. As you can see, they did a really nice job. I also think, too, that we were prepared for Perryville's aggressiveness because they're a good team. Our girls rose above the calls and the fouls and tried to play their best." Goalie Ashley McFarlane and the Tigers had a huge game on defense. Biz Hurm scored four goals while keeping one of Perryville's most dangerous scorers off the scoreboard. Shivery and Liz Zatalava each provided two goals and an assist. Molly Raser recorded a goal and an assist. Logan Alexander and Abby Mackeprang each added a goal. Jordan Carr scored all five of Perryville's goals. The Panthers were without leading scorer Bea Muscella, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury against Patterson Mill two games earlier on April 24. "She found out today she had torn her ACL so that was a depressing blow and why we [played poorly]," Perryville coach Mary Dunman said. "We knew this was going to be a struggle due to the fact we have so many injuries. Two concussions, an ankle. I've got six injured people. I brought two JV players up to play in the game so my bench was very thin. We've battled all season up in the Chesapeake [Division], to the point we've battled ourselves injured. Playing Rising Sun at the end of the season, they're aggressive and good. And their goalie (Ashley MacFarlane) did spectacular…Rising Sun played like they wanted to beat us and they beat us." It marked the first time Rising Sun had beaten Perryville since a 14-9 triumph in a region semifinal game on May 12, 2008. Guethler had four goals in that game and current Tiger assistant coach Whitney Diehl was also a member of that squad. Rising Sun went on to defeat North East in the region final to become the first county lacrosse program to advance to the state semifinals. "Since I've been coaching for six years, four years as a head coach, and I was in the last group of girls to beat Perryville, it has always been one of my things," said Guethler. "I've wanted them to feel that victory. It was super. It was awesome. They were so pumped up. They were so excited. For me, I feel fulfilled in a sense. I feel accomplishment that I was able to be a part of it." Aberdeen 5, Rising Sun 4 Rising Sun fell a goal short in its comeback bid at Aberdeen Tuesday afternoon, May 1. The Tigers trailed 5-2 at halftime before getting within a goal on an Emily Fanning score with nine minutes remaining in regulation. Rising Sun was plagued by turnovers for the next eight minutes. Rising Sun had three potential game-tying shots in the final minute, but one was saved and two went wide, including an opportunity in the last second. Molly Raser tallied twice to lead the Tigers and Kaitlyn Shivery supplied a goal. Rising Sun at Aberdeen
