Havre de Grace outscored the Rising Sun girls lacrosse team 3-1 in overtime to top the Tigers 9-7 on a chilly, damp evening Wednesday. The visiting Warriors jumped on top quickly in the first of the two three-minute extra sessions. Taylor Johnson won the overtime-opening draw and scored to give Havre de Grace a 7-6 lead. She repeated that feat to make it a two-goal game.
"Prior to this game we had been killing it on draw controls," Rising Sun coach Becca Guethler said. "We were just outmatched. [Johnson] was a great player. That's something we just have to work on, revamp, and come back." The Tigers' Heather Amos scored to trim the deficit to 8-7 with two minutes left in the second OT period. But Havre de Grace controlled the ball the rest of the way and Johnson added an insurance marker with 31 seconds to go. Amos finished with two goals and two assists. Sam Foster had a team-high three goals. Sarah Yashinksie added a pair of goals. Emily Ball and Olivia Zorn each recorded an assist. The Tigers trailed 3-0 before battling back to take a 5-4 lead at halftime when Yashinskie converted a pass from Amos. Foster upped the advantage to 6-4 but the Rising Sun offense fizzled late and Havre de Grace tallied the last two goals of regulation to force overtime. "One of our biggest problems is that we like to rush things," said Guethler. "Being an attacker, I know the feeling. You think, 'I've got to score, I've got to score, I've got to score'. Really when you're settled and you're composed and you're poised, good things happen. Really, that's just a learning curve." It was a vast improvement for the Tigers, who lost 12-5 to Havre de Grace in the third game of the season. "I definitely felt like we dominated the whole game," Guethler said. "It's just one of those things where it's a mental thing when you go into overtime. I think a lot of players psyche themselves out. But I have to say I am so proud of them. Whether we win or we lost they played so hard. That was the best defensive sets we've had all season. And our attack was all team ball." Comments are closed.
