Rising Sun's boys basketball team turned things around. The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak by winning three straight including a 43-36 triumph over visiting North East Friday night. Rising Sun led 28-22 entering the fourth quarter. The indians trimmed their deficit down to one on two separate occasions, but both times the Tigers had an answer. North East's Nasir Williams tallied the first five points of the fourth quarter before Will Farrington hit a corner jumper and Casey Baker buried a three-pointer to extend Rising Sun's lead back to six. Chase Hollister scored for the Indians and Gunnar Reynolds followed with a three-pointer to narrow the gap to 33-32 with 2:38 remaining. The Tigers' Noah Juergens countered with a runner in the lane and Farrington sank another corner jumper. Jake Keane made two free throws to up the lead to 39-32 with 1:30 left, but North East did not go quietly. Hollister hit a pair of free throws and Kobie Matthews made it a one-possession game with 34 ticks left. Keane made the front end of a one-and-one with 21 seconds remaining and then blocked a shot at the other end to help seal the deal. "We definitely played with intensity," Rising Sun coach Don Passenant said. "And they played a good, hard defense, and got the ball back. Our offense wasn't clicking and we played good, hard defense. We got important baskets and they just stepped up. Every one of those guys can step up and that's a great thing. We don't have just one guy who has to, although Will made some great shots. I'll say that. But I know that any guy can step up at any point." Farrington finished with 15 including several key baskets. "He was a little tight at the beginning of the game and I even told the guys to just relax," Passenant said. "I could tell the way he was shooting his shot. You could see the look on his face. He knew it was going in. And he hit the boards well. He did a heck of a job on the boards. Keane eight of his 11 in the first quarter, including six straight after North East led 5-0. Juergens supplied seven. The Tigers did not come on overconfident despite routing their rivals in the first meeting. "I think they knew that [North East] was going to give us a game," said Passenant. "I could see during the announcements they had their game faces on. Our guys knew it and they came at us pretty good. [North East has] improved. But we responded and this is the type of win you love getting." The coach says the recipe for the winning streak has a few simple ingredients. "Less mistakes," said Passenant. "Being smarter out there. I think intense, but a little calmer, including me." Last Thursday, the Tiger topped host Fallston 59-39. Farrington led the way with 15 points and Juergens added 11. Keane and David Moore each supplied seven. On Tuesday, February 2, Rising Sun recorded a 47-45 win at Havre de Grace. Bryce Brown had 12 points and Casey Baker, Juergens, and Farrington each provided nine. Comments are closed.
