Rising Sun baseball coach Clyde Van Dyke is confident his club will play better baseball, but warns it may not happen overnight. The Tigers (1-3) showed some flashes Friday before losing to Fallston, 5-3. Rising Sun tallied three times in the bottom of the second to go up 3-0 but Cougars pitcher Bryce Logan shut the hosts down the rest of the way. "If we're playing defense, we're not hitting the ball. If we're hitting the ball, we're not getting good defense," Van Dyke said. "We don't have the chemistry we had last year. We've got guys playing positions they've never played before. So we need to get that chemistry and they need to get used to playing where they are, but it's going to take a while. You've got an outfielder trying to learn to play shortstop. You have guys who weren't with us last year and came up and are now juniors. They're trying to learn the system. It's just going to take time for them to adjust. If we get it all together – offense, defense, and pitching – in a game, we'll be competitive." Trailing 3-0, Fallston countered quickly with two runs in the top of the third and scored twice in the fifth to take the lead. After the Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth, Rising Sun threatened in the home half. With two outs, Andrew Anders was hit by a pitch. Asher Sloman reached on an infield hit when the Fallston shortstop made a nice play to knock the ball down but threw later to second in an attempt to force Anders. But Logan retired the next hitter to quash the threat and got the Tigers 1-2-3 in the seventh. Rising Sun had taken a 3-0 lead in the second on RBI singles, by Sloman, Phil Lyons, and Derek Schoff. Jack Stewart got things started with a ground single to right. After an out, Stewart moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Against a drawn-in infield, Sloman hit the ball hard toward the shortstop and it took a bad hop off his shoulder. Lyons followed with a run-scoring hit to center. Noah Juergens singled to put runners on the corners and Schoff bounced an RBI single to right. Last Wednesday, Rising Sun lost 12-2 in five innings to host Bel Air. Comments are closed.
