The Rising Sun baseball lost two of three games last week. The Tigers lost 6-2 to visiting Bel Air Friday. Reliever Phil Lyons turned in an outstanding effort to keep Rising Sun in the game. Lyons entered in the first with one out and two on and his team already trailing 2-0. The sophomore lefty allowed the two inherited runners to score but then blanked the Bobcats until the seventh. He finished with 11 strikeouts.
"After the first inning, he settled down a little bit and got on top of the baseball and started throwing strikes," Rising Sun coach Clyde Van Dyke said. "We just couldn't get him any run support. We hit the ball hard, and when we did, they made the plays. That's the way the game goes but we're pleased with the way he threw." The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third. Lyons got things started with a single to center. He went to second on an errant pickoff attempt and to third on a fly ball out. Lyons scored on a single by Derek Schoff, whose hard hit ball took a bad hop over the shoulder off the Bel Air first baseman. Andrew Anders followed with a single through the hole, but the next batter was retired on a comebacker. Rising Sun creeped closer in the fourth. Tony Martin was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. With Martin running, Tyler Snyder hit a grounder up the middle. Martin leapt over the ball and the Bobcats' second baseman could not field it cleanly. The ball rolled into shallow center field and Martin made it to third. He scored on Asher Sloman's fielder's choice grounder. Aaron Richardson fisted a single to center but the next two hitters grounded out. The Tigers got a baserunner in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not score. Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, Jack Stewart reached on an error and Schoff walked however the next three batters were retired to end the game. Last Wednesday, Rising Sun upended Elkton 11-2 behind a complete game from Noah Juergens. Juergens struck out three and gave up two hits and three walks. Stewart was 2 for 3 and scored three runs. Lyons was 2 for 2 with two runs scored. On Monday, April 11, Patterson Mill topped the Tigers 12-2. Comments are closed.
