The Rising Sun baseball team capped off a perfect week with a dramatic 7-6 win over visiting Bohemia Manor Thursday afternoon. Aaron Richardson drilled an RBI single to center with one-out in the bottom of the seventh to plate pinch-runner Alex Billings with the winning run. The Eagles just rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game before Rising Sun responded. The Tigers (5-1) got a huge break when the Bohemia Manor right fielder dropped a fly ball off the bat of Jake Bower to begin the inning. Jake Keane was unable to lay down a bunt but wound up drawing a walk. Derek Schoff popped out on a bunt to bring Richardson to the plate. "I'm thinking it's a big opportunity to get an RBI and win the game," the junior right fielder said. He got the pitch he was looking for and jumped on it. "I was sitting red dead fastball," Richardson said. "His off-speed pitch was going for strikes so I was looking fastball." Richardson, in his first season on varsity, said the hit gives him confidence. "It sets the tone for the rest of the year," he said. Bohemia Manor took a 1-0 lead in the first when starting pitcher David Jackson singled to plate Bryan Bell, who had singled. Rising Sun rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third. Keane got things started with a bloop hit, stole second, and scored on an error. Richardson then drew walk. After an out, Zach Van Dyke had an RBI single and Brennan Martz later added a two-run single. The Tigers tacked on two more in the home half of the sixth. Cole Benjamin had an RBI single and Brennan Martz singled with a run scoring after the ball was mishandled by the center fielder. Those runs came in handy. The top of the seventh started with an alert defensive play by Richardson. The leadoff hitter lined an apparent single to right but Richardson fielded the ball and fired to first for the out. Tigers' starter Noah Juergens, who threw six strong innings, began to tire in the seventh and Bohemia Manor got within a run and had runners on first and second with two out. Rising Sun coach Clyde Van Dyke reluctantly turned to his ace, Benjamin, who had tossed a complete game three days earlier. The first batter he faced hit a dribbler to the right of the mound and the ball got between the shortstop and third baseman, allowing the tying run to score. Jack Stewart, who moved from left field to first base when Benjamin took the mound, made a nice place on a popup in shallow right to end the inning. Following the game, Van Dyke said Benjamin would not have returned to pitch another inning but that became moot when Richardson came through in the bottom of the seventh. Comments are closed.
