TyRell Hollingsworth wanted to score his 1,000th point in exciting fashion. That's exactly what he did. The Perryville senior threw down a dunk on an alley-oop pass from Elijah Johnson to reach the milestone with 5:25 left in the third quarter of Friday night's contest. This game was a celebration of Perryville's humble, soft-spoken superstar. "He was determined he was going to have a good night," Perryville coach Charles Givens Sr. said of Hollingsworth. "He was going to get the points that he needed. He was confident. And he did that. He played defense. He tried to set other people up. That was typical him." With dozens of family, friends, and former teammates in attendance, Hollingswoth was resolved to achieve the feat in front of the home crowd. "I was just trying to do anything I could to get my points so I could get to 1,000 instead of doing it away next week," he said. Hollingsworth scored the game's first seven points and had 13 in the first quarter as Perryville raced to a 22-8 lead. The only drama remaining was whether Hollingsworth would reach the milestone and that answer came early in the third quarter. Hollingsworth was stationed along the baseline to the right of the basket and Johnson had the ball on the left wing. Johnson's pass was right on the money and Hollingsworth dunked it home. "I just tried to figure out a big way to get my 1,000th point," said Hollingsworth. "Elijah threw the ball and I caught it," he said, echoing a phrase he uttered numerous times over the course of the football season. "I was real happy and excited. Everything that could happen." Hollingsworth finished one assist away from a triple-double with 36 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists. Tony Smith recorded 15 points and four assists. Elijah Johnson collected 14 points and seven assists. "I thought it was a good game," said Givens. "It got sloppy at the end but they came out and did what I asked them to do at the very beginning, come out and play defense. Play defense and everything else falls into place." Comments are closed.
