Perryville's softball team stayed perfect with a five-inning win over host Rising Sun Monday afternoon, April 11. The result is officially 11-1. The visiting book (Perryville) and reporters had the score 10-1 but Rising Sun's book had it 11-1. Carly White collected three hits and four RBIs including a three-run double in the Panthers' seven-run uprising in the fourth.
Winning pitcher Emily Phillips yielded three hits and three walks and fanned five. Perryville coach Dave Ruark has won two of the three meetings with his friend, Rising Sun coach Rusty Moore. "We're riding a good wave of momentum right now," Ruark said. "We've had a pretty good run of getting on top of teams, taking away some of the things that they do well. I know, having conversed with Rusty, their bunting was something he felt was a strength. They get down big and that [is taken away. Em, other than the one inning, was in complete control. No baserunners and a lot of three up, three downs. We've been able to get a big inning almost every game. We're getting three or four in an inning. Pitching, defense, and opportune hitting. That's kind of what's going on. With the wind, I didn't think we'd have a lot of extra-base hits. But the girls came up aggressive and had a couple of nice ropes, hitting line drives over the outfielders' heads. Our runners were ready to go. Just a lot of the same. Just pitching, defense, hitting. It's making my job easy right now, for sure." Perryville jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first. Amber Keen led off the game with a walk. With one out, Lydia Hill hammered an RBI triple down the right field line. White followed with a run-scoring double that caromed off the third baseman's glove and down the left field line. In the third, White singled with two outs and courtesy runner Brooke Reynolds scored on Kaitlyn Griffin's triple to deep right. The Panthers busted the game wide-open in the fourth. Ashley Meekins walked, stole second, and scored on Phillips' single to right-center. Mara Little reached on a bunt hit and Keene ripped a two-run double down the left field line. After a walk to Reese and a bloop single by Hill, White crushed a ball into the wind that still managed to sail over the head of the left fielder. Griffin added an RBI single. "A couple times we got beat by the wind on a couple hits [that were] routine fly balls that we probably make the play nine times out of 10," Moore said. "We tried to throw some off-speed at them early. Then, the first inning we got a little bit behind. The second inning we did well. And then it just kind of steamrolled on us there in the third and the fourth." Rising Sun got on the board in the fourth when Maddie Foard drew a bases-loaded walk. "We talk about never giving up," said Moore. "We don't ever want to see them put their heads down. The game isn't over until it's actually over. We keep preaching that, keep trying and fighting. And when they stop [the game], they stop it." Comments are closed.
