The Perryville softball team advanced to the second round of the region tournament by nipping Havre de Grace 3-2 Thursday afternoon. The Warriors had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh before Panthers pitcher Mara Little recorded a strikeout and retired the following batter on a fly ball to center.
The game's pivotal sequence came in the fifth inning. With the score tied 2-2 and a runner on first, the Havre de Grace batter belted a shot over the head of the Perryville center fielder Amber Keene. Keene retrieved the ball and fired it back in to the cutoff man, shortstop Ellen Little. Little gunned the ball toward the plate in plenty of time for catcher Kristyn Gardner to make the tag. Gardner then picked a runner off third to quell the threat. With one out in the home half of the fifth, Gardner clubbed a triple to center and scored the go-ahead run when Mara Little reached on an error. Havre de Grace had two one-run leads in the first three innings. The Panthers' Nicole DiGiambattista homered on an absolute bomb to left field to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Gardner and Mara Little also teamed up to plate the game-tying run in the third. Gardner reached on an infield single and hustled to second after the ball trickled off the Warriors' second baseman and into shallow center. She scored on an error on a ball off the bat of Little. The score remained 2-2 until the Perryville defense came up big in the fifth to set the stage for the Gardner-Mara Little combination to strike again. Perryville 1, C. Milton Wright 0 C.
