Playing their first game of the year, the Perryville girls lacrosse team wanted to see an influx of newcomers mesh with a talented core of returning players. Rising Sun sought improvement from their season opener. Both teams met their objectives as the Panthers topped the Tigers 12-9 Wednesday afternoon. "We came out with 10 different people than last year," Perryville coach Mary Dunman said. "They all found their footing. The beginning was rough. It was a little scary in the beginning. And once my defense got their little mojo going, we got into it. It's the same thing as every year with a different team. We did well. Our transitions were sloppy in the beginning but in the second half, our transitions got better. Our goalie (Cali Tyson) had a good game which is always good. She stepped right in."
The Panthers scored four straight goals to snap a 2-2 tie and led 7-5 at halftime. Perryville started strong in the second half, scoring three quick goals to up their advantage to 10-8 before Rising Sun rallied with four consecutive scores. "They came out intense [in the second half]," Rising Sun coach Becca Guethler said of the Panthers. "For us, it was just a matter of revamping, playing strong defense like we had in the beginning. Because we were on the opposite of that at the beginning of the game. We were the ones winning the draws. I just think, too, with that is a big burst of energy and that's when you can hang your heads. But I felt like we came right back out of it. Called a timeout. That works." The Tigers cut the deficit to 10-9 on a free position goal by Heather Amos. Perryville controlled the ensuing draw. Up a player following a Rising Sun foul, the Panthers' Merve Akbay scored to make it a two-goal game and Ally Remesch added an insurance goal. That was enough for the Perryville defense and Tyson, who was making her first varsity start between the pipes. "I was actually really nervous," Tyson said. "But once the game started, I kind of joined into the game. That was all I was worried about." Freshman Bea Muscella and sophomore Sydnie Bjork (two assists) each scored three goals for Perryville. Akbay and Taylor Poore both tallied twice. Gabby Frederick also scored. "Six people scoring and four different people with assists," said Dunman. "Our team always has multiple scorers so you don't know where the threat comes from. They work well together. I thought they communicated well." Holding the high-powered Panthers to 12 goals was a source of pride for the Tigers. "[Defense] was definitely an emphasis for this year," said Guethler. "Defense all the way down the field, the whole field. I think, too, our 8 defense was great. They're communicating. They're sliding. This is the best defensive set that we've had at Rising Sun in my opinion." Heather Amos led Rising Sun with three goals. Zatalava and Sarah Yashinskie each added a pair of goals and Sam Foster and Jackie Barbon each contributed a goal. Guethler saw improvement from a 15-4 loss to Old Mill two days earlier. "I feel like the first game we played [there] was definitely a learning curve," she said. "We practiced really hard [Tuesday] and [against Perryville] it wasn't really as consistent as we wanted. The girls will agree with me when I say that. I think we had moments of picture-perfect lacrosse. And it's just those little things, basic things. Running after the ball. Catching it. But overall, it looked great. And I'm happy. I'm a happy coach." Comments are closed.
