Perryville coach Mike Blizzard was almost at a loss for words immediately following his team's 36-19 loss to visiting Joppatowne Thursday night. "I'm hard-pressed to find something good to say," he said. The Panthers scored nine points in the first quarter, but only a combined 10 points over the final three stanzas. "We didn't make the other team play defense," Blizzard said. "We just threw it away. We didn't take care of the ball."
Joppatowne led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter as the Mariners were able to break the Perryville press and get behind the defense for layups. As a result, the Panthers were forced to stop pressing the length of the court. Both teams struggled mightily in the second quarter and Joppatowne led 15-12 at halftime. The Mariners sailed away in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 10-3. Angel James nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key with one second left in the quarter to give her team a 25-15 edge. Needing to start scoring in bunches to get back in the game, the Panthers were held without a point for the first 4:47. Jules Jones hit two three-pointers and finished with a team-high six points. Teri Wennersten collected four points, 15 rebounds and five steals. Perryville (4-9 overall, 3-6 UCBAC) had won earlier this season at Joppatowne. The Panthers started the week off on a good note by avenging an early season loss to Elkton. Jill Miller scored 15 points and Lydia Hill and Wennersten each added six as Perryville prevailed 33-20.
