The Perryville girls basketball team discovered where they had an upper hand over Rising Sun and promptly seized upon that advantage. Frontcourt players Emani Bell (21 points) and Brianna Yadlosky (18) combined for 39 of the Panthers' 52 points as the visitors topped the Tigers 52-35 Monday night, January 22. Perryville was able to deftly handle Rising Sun's press and worked the ball down low for a spate of easy baskets.
"After our first and second game this season, a lot of people said Perryville had all these issues with beating a press," Panthers coach Amanda Wolfe said. "Now, we love to be pressed. Pressing teams don't like to be pressed. We love to be pressed." Once the Panthers were able to move the ball across midcourt, the Tigers had no answers for Bell and Yadloskey. "We ran out of gas. That was one problem," Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt said. "And they killed us inside with their size…They exploited our weakness which is definitely our size." The Tigers were without two starters – guard Kira Watson and forward Julia Herrmann. "Part of the problem was we didn't have those two players so we had two bench people starting that wouldn't have started," said Stoudt. "We ran out of gas." Rising Sun led 16-11 midway through the second quarter. Perryville ended the half with a 9-3 run to grab a one-point halftime lead. The Tigers regained an edge on two free throws by Ally Bradford to start the third quarter before the Panthers took command with a 12-2 spurt. Bell had 10 points in that stretch. "She's been breaking out of her shell," Wolfe said of Bell. "Boxing out. Putting up the ball strong. Confidence is up." Wolfe had a simple message for Bell. "She told me, 'Get the bunnies (layups), go up real strong and just do what you got to do'," said Bell. The Panthers had a 34-26 cushion at the end of the third quarter and started the final stanza with baskets by Yadloskey and Jordyn Pollitt. Rising Sun never got closer than 10 the rest of the way. Kendra Stamper led the Tigers with 18 points. "Honestly, we didn't know what we were coming in to," said Wolfe. "So we just tried to come in and play our game and work hard…Fundamental, focused, organized basketball. That's what we strive to have." Comments are closed.
