It was a 'Titan-ic' comeback for the Perryville boys basketball team. The Panthers scored the game's last 12 points capped off by a Bobby Monk basket with 4.7 seconds left to top Tome 41-39 Monday night, December 14. After a Titans' timeout, Perryville's Tyleke Johnson stole a pass at midcourt to seal the deal. "We mounted a comeback," Perryville coach Charles Givens Sr. said. "I don't know how, but we did. The kids played defense the second half. Pressed them a little bit, something we have not occasionally used. After we tried a lot of resources we went to that to see what that would do for us. So, that worked out. We played everybody, getting people in and out trying to find a combination. Of course, we didn't think it was going to happen but we came back." Tome had taken a 37-21 lead with 2:01 left in the third quarter on a three-pointer by Michael Lucatamo. With Perryville employing a trapping defense, the Titans tallied just two points over the final 10 minutes, 1 second. After Johnson and Dominic Gugliotta scored early in the fourth quarter to narrow the gap to 37-29, the Panthers' momentum stalled. Perryville committed a turnover and Johnson missed a dunk attempt. Chase Wunder made two free throws to extend Tome's lead to 39-29 with 2:52 left in the game. The tide changed for good nine seconds later when Perryville's Nick Roberts was fouled while hitting a three-pointer and made the free throw. Tréshawn Warren added a basket and Roberts scored to make it 39-37 with 1:43 to go. The Panthers tied it with 1:17 left when Tome was guilty of goaltending on Johnson's runner in the lane. The Titans turned the ball over on the ensuing possession. Perryville took a timeout with 19.6 seconds left. Johnson missed a shot, got his own rebound, and missed again. But Monk corralled the rebound and hit a short jumper. "We had to fight for rebounds," Monk said. "Our coaches tell us in every practice and game, rebounds, rebounds, rebounds. And I got the winning rebound." Monk is a frequent target of Givens' usually constructive criticism but Monk made sure the coach had nothing to complain about. "He sure did [come through]," Givens said. "He really did. Bobby can only play in spurts. He'll play well for two minutes and then tear you up for the next five. That's Bobby's game. But in this instance right there he came through at the right time." Johnson paced Perryville with 10 points. Roberts finished with seven. Evan Burchett had seven points before having to leave the game in the third quarter when his nose was bloodied while battling for a rebound. Monk and Warren each supplied six. On several occasions, it appeared as though Tome would win in a rout. Givens acknowledged there were "a lot of times" he thought there was no way the Panthers were going to pull it out. The Titans scored the first 10 points of the game. The Panthers clawed back to within 13-10 but were assessed a technical foul for having six players on the floor. Tome was ahead 24-13 at halftime and maintained a double-digit lead in the third quarter. "In the first quarter I thought it was going to look bad," said Monk. "We came out at halftime with the fire and intensity and we got the 'W'." Comments are closed.
