Eric Steele delivered an RBI single to left in the bottom of the eighth as the North East baseball team ousted visiting Rising Sun 5-4 Monday, May 16. Pinch hitter Blake Bare singled through the hole to start the eighth. Payton Hoskins reached on an infield single in the hole. After Derek Adams came on to relieve Brandon Snyder, Patrick O'Brien laid down a perfectly placed bunt to load the bases. Steele worked the count to 3-0, took a strike, and then singled sharply to left to end the Tigers' season.
Rising Sun had to battle back just to force extra innings. The Indians tallied three times in the first. With one out, O'Brien singled to left. Steele followed with an RBI double when his bouncing ball down the third base line caromed off the glove of the Tiger third baseman and rolled out of play. Winning pitcher Colt Price lashed an RBI triple to right-center to put the hosts ahead 2-0. Price had to stay at third when Rising Sun starter Noah Juergens retired the next hitter on a comebacker. Chase Hollister and Tyler Robinson each walked and Tyler Miller drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Rising Sun got on the board in the third. Asher Sloman hustled into second for a double after hitting the ball off the shortstop's glove in the hole. Aaron Richardson reached out and slapped an RBI single down the left field line. North East tacked on a run in the home half. Tyler Robinson roped an RBI double which one-hopped the left field fence and put runners on second and third. Snyder came on in relief and retired the next two hitters to minimize the damage. The Tigers' freshman hurler kept his team in the game by tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings before allowing consecutive hits to start the eighth. Rising Sun trimmed its deficit down to 4-3 in the fourth. Derek Schoff walked and Keane smacked a single to center. Snyder moved the runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt and Anders came through with a two-run double similar to Steele's double in the first. The Tigers wasted a leadoff double in the fifth but plated the tying run in the sixth. With one out, Keane singled to left. After the second out, Anders singled to right-center to put runners on the corners and Casey Baker supplied a clutch RBI single. Both teams stranded two baserunners in the seventh. Richardson led off the top half with a walk and advanced on a Phil Lyons sac bunt. Jack Stewart lined a single to left and Richardson had to stop at third. The cleanup hitter Schoff bunted. Richardson was unable to head home and Schoff was thrown out at first. Price got the next hitter on a fly to center. The Indians had runners on first and second with two out when the third baseman Anders fielded a grounder and stepped on the bag for a force. Rising Sun received a two-out single from Baker in the top of the eighth but that was all. The Tigers never got an out in the home half. Comments are closed.
