North East girls basketball team downed visiting Rising Sun 44-33 on Tuesday night, January 10. "We are getting better every week. Today we played together as a team and everyone contributed," said North East head coach Chris Hadjis. "We were behind a little bit but we were able to comeback and they showed another great effort." In the beginning it seemed as though the Tigers were in it to win it but when North East's top scorer, Janiya Bibbons came onto the court, things changed. "She is really athletic, she was killing us on the board, in the paint. Even when she didn't get a rebound she was jumping up and tapping the ball out and she really hurt us," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. The Indians struggled with Rising Sun's defense but were able to change the pace and scored 19 points in the first half. "They (North East) moved the ball well, they had trouble with our press in the beginning but then they were able to beat it and then when they did that they were able to get the ball down the court and make easy lay ups," said Stoudt. While struggling with North East's speed and pressure, the Tigers never stopped trying. "We panicked a little bit on the press, but we had a run down at the end when Bella Barbato hit that three, but we fell short," said Stoudt. "The opponent attacked the basket well, they rebounded well and they are a well coached team. They played hard ball for 32 minutes. Even when we got a little bit ahead by eight or ten points they just kept playing hard," said Hadjis. North East's top players were Bibbons, Ana Gamble, and Amaya Foran. Bibbons scored a total of 18 points, made seven rebounds and four assists. Gamble added ten points and Foran made five. "Foran came off the bench and gave us a lot of our spark and (her) attacking the basket really got us moving," said Hadjis. For Rising Sun, Megan Brown scored 13 points, had 17 rebounds and six blocks. Barbato had seven points and four steals. Gabrielle Vaughan added three points, made five rebounds and four steals. Coach Hadjis wants his team to continue to correct their mistakes and work on the basics. "Take this win on to next week and just keep building and building. Improve on rebounding, not turning the ball over and maybe hitting some outside shots and making our lay ups," said Hadjis. Even though the Tigers lost, Stoudt is pleased with how her team performed. "We are young and we're learning everyday. I am so proud of them tonight, they really played great," said Stoudt. Comments are closed.
