The Rising Sun girls basketball team missed out on an opportunity to clinch the Susquehanna Division title Thursday night when they suffered a 55-36 setback to host Harford Tech. Both teams ended division play with just one loss. The Tigers had topped the Cobras earlier in the season, but this time, Tech dominated. "I just think it was Harford Tech's night," Rising Sun coach Kathy Stoudt said. "Everything rolled their way. They had the momentum of Senior Night. They had homecourt advantage. They had the fans. They came ready to play. We made many adjustments but none of them were able to counteract the great momentum they had."
The Cobras scored the game's first six points and never trailed. Ahead 20-10 at the end of the first quarter, Tech tallied five straight points to start the second quarter and up the advantage to 25-10. "The last time we played them or in previous years they weren't as hot from the field as they were [Thursday night]," said Stoudt. "Everything was going their way. Every ball bounced their way. They outrebounded us. They outshot us. We never got on a roll at all." That's when Rising Sun made its only run. Kaytlen Nugent hit a baseline jumper to start a strong of six consecutive points which trimmed the deficit to 25-16. But the Cobras countered with five in a row to lengthen the lead to 30-16 at halftime. Tech led 46-24 at the end of the third quarter. "I think Number 3 (Jonna Maddox) is a phenomenal player," Stoudt said. "No. 24 (Brianna McAllister), we faced her for three years. Number 3 and 24 are just phenomenal players. You could tell Number 3 brought her 'A' game and they were ready to play…They're a great team. The first time we played them, we played phenomenal. This time, they played phenomenal." Maddox collected 23 points, 10 assists, and six steals. McAllister provided 16 points, 14 rebounds, six steals, and six assists. Lexi Osborne paced Rising Sun with 11 points and five rebounds. Abby Mack added nine points and 10 boards and Brooke Bower supplied eight points and six rebounds. Stoudt said she's not worried about the Tigers' poor performances in recent losses to Tech and Fallston. "I think there are times this season we played excellent basketball," she said. "We've had a great year so I don't want to diminish that. There's a psyche that goes with our team and maybe our county of playing teams in Harford County and in the upper division and I'm still trying to figure that out. I'm not concerned. I just think [it] wasn't our night." The division title will be determined by a tiebreaker. If Harford Tech defeats Fallston Monday night, the Cobras will earn a promotion to the Chesapeake Division. Fallston is the only common non-division opponent Tech and the Tigers will have played. Rising Sun lost at Fallston. "Everything we tried just didn't go our way," said Stoudt. "Sometimes that happens in sports. They should be proud of the season that we've had so far. The season's not over. The second part of the season starts now, the playoffs so we need to digest [the Harford Tech loss] and regroup and come back at it Monday ready to practice." Comments are closed.
