Elkton girls basketball team got off to a slow start in its 53-40 win over Tome on January 30. The Titans and the Elks were tied at 11 points at the end of the first period. In the second, Elkton's Ty Segure and Vanessa Dunn both scored three pointers. Courtney Hardy added two baskets giving the Elks a seven point lead at half-time. "We were losing our composure at one point and we just got it together and started playing as a team," said point guard Segure. Tome attempted to make a comeback in the fourth after Abby Hershner scored a three pointer but the Titans lost their momentum.
"We're running out of gas. We have six on the team right now, a couple are away and one's hurt. We really just ran out of gas. This is our fourth game in a row and we have another one tomorrow (January 31). So we are struggling to push through. But that's one of the best games I have seen my girls play collectively as a team," said Tome head coach Jamie Hensley. "Tome's strong, Cate Tassone and Lindsay Llewellyn are always good players and we know that and Hershner is terrific inside for them. It did not surprise me that they hung the way they did. Tome's got some players," said Elkton head coach Chris Dunn. The Elks top scorers were Segure with 16 points and Dunn with 15 points. Segure had five assists and Dunn made four. For the Titans, Llewellyn scored eight points and Hershner racked up 17. Despite the Titans lost, Coach Hensley is happy to see the improvements her team has made. "I am extremely proud of my team. Elkton is a phenomenal team, they have a great coach. We are playing pretty good competition with them and we knew they are a powerhouse in the county. I could not be more proud of how my girls played today. They never gave up, we chip away at every deficit we had and try to keep it as close as we can but we just ran out of gas," said Hensley.
