The fifth time wasn't the charm. Taylor Aumiller scored on a long, floating shot 6:10 into overtime to give the Fallston girls soccer team a 1-0 triumph over host Rising Sun in a region semifinal game Friday afternoon. It is the fifth straight season the Cougars have ousted the Tigers from the region tournament. Rising Sun has not scored a goal in those five games. The Tigers stood toe-to-toe with their nemesis, but could not score that elusive goal.
"I couldn't be more proud of the way our girls played," Rising Sun coach Johnny Hartnett said. "They stepped up to the plate. They knew they had a chance to win this game. They knew that the game could go either way. They played 80 minutes. Well, it ended up being more than 80 minutes. They knew it would be a good fight. They knew it wouldn't come easy." The Tigers displayed their resiliency when starting goalie Kira Watson suffered a broken finger midway through the first half and had to be transported to the hospital.. Backup Becca Culver entered the game and played superbly. "Big kudos to Becca for stepping up in goal," said Hartnett. "That's the first time she stepped foot on a varsity field. She was not expecting to play. Losing Kira Watson, that's huge so kudos to our team for stepping up in that time." After Fallston had more possession of the ball in the first half, the second half was played on even terms. Neither squad had many golden opportunities. In overtime, Aumiller took a shot from about 33 yards out which floated over the fingertips of Culver and into the top corner of the net. "It was just a little bit unlucky," Hartnett said. "It was kind of a floater, floated over Becca. She played an awesome game. She made phenomenal saves so all credit to her. And all credit to their team. I wish Fallston the best of luck moving forward." Although history was not on its side, Rising Sun was not intimidated. "These girls know they can play with anybody," said Hartnett. "They weren't looking at Fallston like they were anybody else. They came into this game thinking they're just another team. It was just the next game. And we've been preaching that all year. It's the next game, next game. They did well. I'm really proud of them." Comments are closed.
