Elkton junior softball team came out swinging and ended up on top. The Elkton team handily defeated host Rising Sun 24-1 on July 5. Elkton took a 6-0 lead in the first inning. "The hitting worked well for us. I really could not do this alone, it had to be a team effort. It's amazing (for us) to win this game," said Elkton's shortstop Autumn Simpson. After Elkton's Karen Unterreiner singled in the top of the third and Azarea Visser hit a double, there were runners on second and third. Isabella Tokash hit a line drive to Rising Sun's shortstop, who caught it. Although Tokash was out, the sacrifice let Unterreiner score. Maddie Sheets and Lily Sims were then walked to load the bases. Simpson's single allowed Visser to score, giving Elkton an (14-0) lead. "We have come up short a couple of times and to go ahead and take the district crown is a big achievement. We are real proud of the girls and they earned it. The bats spoke for themselves today. I think everybody just relaxed a little bit and that was key," said head coach Dan Workman. Elkton continued to score, adding nine runs in the fourth giving them the a 23-0 lead over Rising Sun. Rising Sun scored a run by Carley Kilgore in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. "My curve ball and my drop ball were my main two today. The spots were working real well today. Our offense really helped boost us and boosted the win. We were hitting solid all day and we just kept it going through the whole game," said Elkton pitcher Jillian Holmes. "Our team did great. We were relaxed on the defense and we just kept it going all day through the offense and we all worked well." Elkton has now punched their ticket into the state championship game.
