Despite losing the season opener at Elkton 64-28 last Thursday night, Rising Sun girls basketball coach Kathy Stoudt is not discouraged. Far from it. "I think there were a lot of positives," Stoudt said. "[Last year] we couldn't produce the positive things we did [Thursday night]. We came out strong. We never played fearful. We played aggressive. We had trouble scoring, which we have to work on that but we know what we need to work on. We need to work on a lot but that's one thing. Our kids played with heart. I'm really proud of them."
The Golden Elks turned in an impressive performance, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before breaking the game wide open early in the second quarter. Julia Herrmann finally put the Tigers on the board with 1:21 left in the first quarter. After Bella Barbato scored 10 seconds into the second quarter to trim the deficit down to 10-4, Elkton embarked on a 13-0 spurt. Five different Elks scored in that stretch. Courtney Rogers recorded four points and Zaria Tatem nailed a three-pointer. Elkton led 32-9 at halftime. Rising Sun managed to narrow the gap to 34-18 midway through the third quarter keyed by five points from Lexie Gray, but Elkton's Vanessa Dunn promptly answered with a three-pointer. Stoudt is optimistic about the future of the Rising Sun program, this season and beyond. "The team in particular needs to work on rebounding, scoring, things like that," said Stoudt. "As far as the program goes, we already have a feeder program established so I'm confident that the program is going in the right direction." Comments are closed.
