Mikaela Berg and Jackie Barbon led the offense and the defense held firm as the Rising Sun girls soccer team won twice last week to raise its winning streak to eight. The Tigers edged visiting Avon Grove (Pa.) 2-1 Friday afternoon. Berg started the scoring with a long shot that squirted through the hands of the Avon Grove keeper and into the net. Barbon made it 2-0 with an outstanding individual effort, beating several defenders while dribbling down the left center of the field and into the box before beating the keeper with a left-footed shot inside the far post.
Avon Grove attacked toward the north end of the field in the second half meaning it had the breeze at its back and was doing downhil on the slightly sloped field. Avon Grove cut the lead to 2-1, the first goal the Tigers have allowed over the last seven games. Although the visitors controlled play for much of the second half they were unable to create any great chances to get the equalizer. Rising Sun topped host Perryville 6-0 Monday, September 29. Berg and Barbon each tallied twice for the Tigers. Teresa Reid and Kellie Christie also scored. After Berg put the Tigers ahead, Barbon and Jackie Ayers combined for the prettiest goal of the day. Ayers crossed the ball into the middle of the box and Barbon rocketed home a volley. Photos from the Avon Grove game are below. Click HERE to view photos from the Perryville game.
