Perryville sophomore Cage Jones captured the boys pole vault title at the MPSSAA Class 1A/2A indoor track and field meet Monday, February 22, at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover. Jones won with a height of 11 feet. "Since I'm only a 10th grader, it's an awesome feeling to win a state title," Jones said. "Coach Weiss (Raissa Moore) moved me to a longer pole so that I could vault higher. My confidence increased. I knew I had a shot at winning the title, especially when I didn't hit a single bar until after I had won. My next goal is to get to 12 feet and higher." Moore said Jones peaked at the right time. "Cage's practices got progressively better throughout the indoor season," she said. "He was very focused [Monday night] on what he needed to do which reflected his practices. Cage made all of his jumps on his first attempts and was finally able to jump well on the bigger pole when it was time for it. That jump was the one that won it for him. We are incredibly proud of him." Perryville girls set five school records in the meet. The 4 x 400 relay team comprised of Autumn Estep, Brooke Doane, Ellie Kuhn, and Alysa Conway finished second in a time of 4:20.91, six seconds better than the previous mark. Estep, Doane, Conway, and Kate Broughman were third in the 4 x 200 relay with a school-record time of 1:52. Estep established a Perryville record time of 1:24.65 in finishing fourth in the 500 meter dash. Conway was fifth in the 300 meter dash in a school-best time of 44.17. Two Panthers notched second place finishes, Jarah Cevis in the shot put and Paiton Kelly in the pole vault. Cevis broke her own school record with a distance of 33-2.75. Erika Scheppelmann finished fifth in the pole vault, one spot in front of Kuhn. Estep was sixth in the 55 hurdles, Conway placed seventh in the 500, and Doane recorded an eighth place finish in the 300. Perryville finished fourth in the team standings. Joe Rinehart led the Panther boys with a second place finish in the shot put. Jared Brustman was seventh in the 300 meter dash. Comments are closed.
