The Perryville volleyball team is well-equipped to pursue the elusive state title. The Panthers have captured four straight titles and a fifth is well within their grasp. "We're excited by the ride we've been on," coach Matt Borrelli said. Perryville lost two starters from last year's team which was swept by Smithsburg in the state title match. Borrelli once again expects to be back in position to challenge for the state championship. "We'll be there," he said. "We have a really talented group. The girls are so committed to getting better. They want to bring the best out in each other." Outside hitter Rebekah Hanshaw, middle Teri Wennersten, setter Rose Porch, and outside hitter Gabby Goodnow will lead the way. Newcomer Hailey Jones is expected to contribute at libero. Perryville earned a promotion to the Chesapeake Division so it will face stiffer competition during the regular season. "We're excited to have the opportunity," said Borrelli. "We're excited to show how good we are." Meanwhile, the Panthers are working to narrow the gap on teams like Smithsburg. "Our major focus is on serving," Borrelli said. "It was good last year but we want to have tougher serves and make it difficult for other teams to return our serve and set up their plays." The coach said Perryville has the potential to be better than last year. "We have a well-rounded team," he said. "I don't see any weak spots for us on the court. We will be able to create matchup problems for other teams." He excited to see how good his team can become. "The sky's the limit for this team," said Borrelli. "The talent is here. The right attitudes are here. The work ethic is here. You never want to predict things, but this team is ready and prepared to do great things." Comments are closed.
