Perryville girls basketball coach Mike Blizzard is confident his squad will show vast improvement in its second year under his tutelage. The Panthers were 7-13 last season and lost just one player – point guard Jaleea Woods, who transferred. Junior Kayla Losoya will be the starting point guard. "We need Kayla to get us into everything [on offense], use her speed, and stay out of foul trouble," said Blizzard. Senior captain Jewels Jones provides the Panthers with a perimeter threat. "Jewels can do a little bit of everything for us," said Blizzard. "She can rebound and will be our backup point guard."
Perryville's frontcourt is loaded with talent and experience. Blizzard said returning starters Teri Wennersten and Jill Miller continue to improve. "Teri is playing to her potential now," he said. "She will go to the basket now without hesitating. She's building on what she accomplished last year." Miller will also help with rebounding and scoring. "Jill's playing better," said Blizzard. "She's doing the things I always thought she could do." The coach said senior captain Lydia Hill "is a quality defensive player and great rebounder who is shooting the ball better." Senior captain Sierra Johnson provides a physical presence down low. Two newcomers will also be part of the mix. Freshman forward Brianna Yadlosky has AAU experience and is a quick learner," said Blizzard. Guard Jordyn Pollitt should boost the Panthers' offense. "She can make shots," said Blizzard. Offense was a major problem for Perryville last season. The Panthers averaged less than 30 points a game. With another year of experience under their belts, Blizzard expects than number to rise at least into the upper 30s. "It's definitely not the easiest system to learn," he said. "Last year we were only able to use about half of our plays. We simplified things last year. This year, I think we can build on that." Blizzard also expects Perryville to be better on defense as they become more accustomed to his hybrid man-to-man defense. Comments are closed.
