The Panthers are persevering. Perryville's boys lacrosse team has been hit hard by injuries but are trying to see a silver lining. "The good thing is it has allowed us to take a look at some other kids," coach Chris Soper said. "We've developed a plan to see who will contribute this year and in the future." Standout goalie Ben Savick is out for the year because of injury, but there is some good news.
Attackman Andrew Crouse returned to practice last week and the Panthers hope to have star attackman Nick Roberts back soon. Matt Mannone, an attackman last year, selflessly volunteered to play goalie in Savick's absence. He has some rec league experience between the pipes. "I have all the confidence in the world in him," said Soper. Soper also has faith in the defense in front of Mannone. "I like our unit," he said. Dominic Muscella will lead the way. "He's really exceptional," Soper said. "He brings a lot of leadership to the table." The coach said he is expecting a big year from returning starter Joe Perry. Rodney Colenda, up from JV, is "getting better every day", the coach said. Sophomore Jarrett Hunter will see action at the longstick midfielder position and freshman Hunter Vaughn is also challenging for playing time. Ray Woods will spearhead the midfield corps. "He can do it all," said Soper. He can face-off, score, and play defense." His brother, freshman Matt Woods, will be a key contributor, as will senior Ryan Bedard, who is spending his fourth year on varsity. Soper said the second and third lines are "a work in progress". Roberts, a finalist for the C. Markland Kelly Award (best high school player in Maryland) last year, will quarterback the offense. Soper expects a successful season from tenacious attackman Nick Ports. "He brings a lot of grit," the coach said. "He's always fighting for the ball." Crouse is an attackman this year after playing in the midfield last season. "We're looking forward to him having a good year," said Soper. Despite the injuries, the coach remains optimistic. "They've been working hard since the first day of practice," he said. "The effort has been outstanding. They're willing to learn and that really bodes well for us." Comments are closed.
