After losing its three leading scorers to graduation, the Perryville boys basketball team will require more teaching and coaching this season. It's an opportunity coach Charles Givens Sr. relishes. "People think you just stand on the sideline directing the team," said Givens, who will be coaching the Panthers for the 40th season. "You do that but you also have to be able to teach." Givens and his staff are enjoying the chance to teach a relatively inexperienced squad. "This team is in the learning process," he said. "It is trying to find an identity."
Givens has high expectations for forward Tyleke Johnson, the only returning starter. "Tyleke has experience and he's showing improvement," said the coach. "Basically, we're looking for Tyleke to take a step higher, be more effective, and add some leadership." Forward Evan Burchette and guards Nick Roberts, Pernell White, Dominic Gugliotta, and Bobby Monk each have some varsity experience. Guard Dennis Johnson transferred from Tri-State Christian and forward Willie Hughes is up from JV. Sophomore Tréshawn Warren, a transfer from Baltimore County, will provide a frontcourt presence. It will take depth to replace starters Elijah Johnson and Tony Smith and 1,000-point scorer Tyrell Hollingsworth. "When you lose three-year starters and a guy who carried the program, you're losing a lot," Givens said. "But Perryville basketball goes on. There's always a ram in a bush." The coach expects his team to continue to improve throughout the year. "We're looking for consistency," Givens said. "We'd like to be competitive and we'd like to be better at the end of the season than we are at the beginning." Comments are closed.
