Elkton senior softball team started strong and finished on top. Elkton defeated host Rising Sun 8-6 on June 27. With no hits in the second inning and Rising Sun leading 3-1, Elkton's Haley Krone hit a grand slam in the top of third to propel them ahead of Rising Sun by a run. "I was just thinking that it was just like practice and I asked my coach if I could bunt the ball and he was like, 'no we have two outs'. So I just went up there and acted like it was practice and then I just launched into the other field," said Elkton Right fielder Haley Krone After striking out Rising Sun's lineup in the bottom of the fifth, Elkton went to work against Rising Sun's Cadence Williams in the top of the sixth. Bella Barbato singled and McKenzie Sweaney also singled, allowing Barbato to score. Catie Eckman came to bat and blasted a single giving Sweaney the chance to score which gave Elkton an (8-4) lead. "She (Krone) was a huge spark for us and she was the difference in the game," said Elkton manager John Connell. "(Reagan Connell) she started hitting her spots and she had more spin on the ball. We have to remember Reagan has pitched every single inning of our games so far in this district so maybe she came in a little tight and not as loose as we wanted her but since then she did great." Rising Sun rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Cadence Williams singled and Chasity Campbell walked putting players on first and second. Madison Cooper hit a triple and knocked Williams' pinch runner Victoria Doctor home to end the game. "We kept this tournament alive with our bats, we're making contact and even if we don't actually get on base we are hitting it hard. The first time we played Rising Sun, we didn't hit it hard and we came back against Perryville and we hit hard. We hit some line drives and home run and came back against Rising Sun," said Connell. "We just got to keep up our momentum and we should be fine in (the tournament). We just got to make everybody calm down and keep our heads up," said Krone. Comments are closed.
