The Elkton All-Stars captured the Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division baseball title with a rain-shortened 7-3 triumph over Rising Sun Tuesday night in Chesapeake City. A thunderstorm ended the contest with Elkton still batting in the bottom of the fifth. Rising Sun scored three runs in the top of the first before being stymied by Elkton starter Will Lorman and reliever Victor Norris. All three of Rising Sun's first inning runs came with two outs in the first. Dakota Hodgson walked and Aaron Richardson singled to right. Hodgson scored when Elkton was unable to catch a popup and Richardson scored on a balk. Jake Keane drew a walk.
The next batter, Dane Ravel, worked the count to 3-2 and fouled off several pitches before delivering an RBI double that bounced over the fence in left-center. The automatic double cost Rising Sun a run because Keane easily would've scored on the hit. Elkton made it 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Owen Null ripped a single to left and Mike Moran and Tyler Ferguson each walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Jacob Winward hit a dribbler toward third. The Rising Sun third baseman Hodgson charged the ball but could not field it cleanly. His flip toward home sailed wide. One run scored but hustle by Hodgson and the catcher Richardson prevented another run from scoring. Richardson quickly chased down the ball and threw to Hodgson covering the plate to get Moran. After Rising Sun could not take advantage of Richardson's leadoff double in the top of the third, Elkton took command with four runs in the home half. Nick Gregson was hit by a pitch and Brent Smith and Null followed with back-to-back automatic doubles that bounced over the left field fence to tie the game. Moran grounded an RBI single up the middle and Brandon Tenney added an RBI single. Ferguson had an RBI triple in the fifth. After emerging from the losers bracket, Rising Sun needed two wins over Elkton to claim the title. Rising Sun had stayed alive with a 5-0 win over Perryville the night before. Caleb Dye hurled a gem and added an RBI hit. Hodgson also had an RBI hit. Comments are closed.
