Elkton's Senior Division softball All-Stars left no doubt. Reagan Connell hurled a no-hitter as Elkton captured the District 5 crown with a convincing 10-0 triumph over Perryville Thursday night at Trego Field. "She pitched fantastic," Elkton manager John Connell said of his daughter. "She was definitely throwing a little harder than the last time we played. She had a lot more movement on her screwball. She was working her curveball down in the zone. And with two strikes, [she'd pitch] high in the zone, which is hard to hit. She did an awesome job."
Perryville needed consecutive wins over Elkton to take the title, but Elkton was determined to put them away in game one. "I just really knew that if we lost then we'd have to play another game," Reagan Connell said. "We didn't want to play another game. We wanted to win. Against Perryville, it's huge victory. And I just threw as hard as I could and I knew it'd be a strike every time." Elkton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and kept tacking on runs. Cierra Young led off with a triple down the left field line and scored on Kasey Barrow's groundout. In the second, Summer Simpson singled and eventually scored on a Sydney Brown basehit. Elkton added three in the fourth. Bella Barbato singled to left, moved to second on Brown's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Young's triple off the base of the left field fence. Two more runs scored on a wild pitch and two Perryville errors. In the sixth, Barrow and Connell both singled and Jaycie Coates walked to load the bases. Simpson delivered a two-run single to make it 7-0 and Summer Simpson plated a run with a groundout. A wild pitch upped the lead to 9-0. Young clubbed her second triple of the game in the seventh and scored on a Barrow single. Elkton had beaten Perryville 8-3 earlier in the tournament. "We knew a lot of the girls had different skills and what they struggled on," said Reagan Connell. "I think that definitely helped, playing them first, so we knew what they couldn't do and what they can do." John Connell made sure his team was not overconfident. "I told them three things," he said. "I said they need to walk on the field with confidence. They need to be aggressive. And just go out and have fun. And that's what they did." Perryville defeated Elkton in last year's district championship game. "It didn't feel too good," Reagan Connell said. "This year, it feels really, really good coming back against them with the victory." Perryville 15, Havre de Grace 6 Leading 8-6, Perryville tallied seven times in the top of the seventh to break it open. Payton Jourdan scored five runs. Kris Gardner had three hits and scored three times and Melissa Savin also scored three runs. Emily James earned the win. For Havre de Grace, Lauren Caudill had two hits including a triple and scored two runs. Elkton 8, Perryville 3 Reagan Connell went the distance to earn the win and helped her own cause with two hits.
