Lightning struck. Then so did Erin DePaul. Again. And again. Elkton's midfielder scored three goals after a weather delay including the game-winner in overtime to lift the Elks to an 11-10 triumph over host Rising Sun Thursday afternoon. The Tigers led 9-7 with less than seven minutes to go when the game was halted because of an approaching storm. DePaul quickly tallied twice to tie the game and Angel Lowe put the Elks in front with 1:15 remaining. After missing a couple chances, Rising Sun got the ball back for one final possession and Liz Zatalava tied it with 16 seconds remaining. DePaul's fifth goal of the game came on the first shot of overtime. She almost ended it in regulation, but her shot went into the goal just a split-second after the horn had sounded. During the approximately 30-minute lightning delay, both teams went into the Rising Sun High gym. The Tigers entered the break riding a wave of momentum but Elkton emerged with it as play resumed under a rainbow. "Obviously, it didn't go in our favor," Rising Sun coach Becca Guethler said of the delay. "I think you have those moments where you're settled. You're not in the same state of mind as you were when you were out there playing in the thick of all of it. Obviously, we were winning before we went in. We lost after coming back out." For Rising Sun, the outcome was eerily similar to last season's home game with Elkton. Last April, the Elks rallied late to prevail 14-13. "I think the girls went into it knowing that," said Guethler. "First half play, I thought was good, Tigers' lacrosse. However, we came back out and the same thing happened all over again. It was like déja vu." Guethler said her squad could not continue the strong fundamental play it exhibited for the first 43 minutes. "Ground ball pickups, catching," she listed as some of the miscues. "Our defense did a great job, however it's just the [lack of] talking and those lapses. Elkton capitalized on that, which is smart play." Rising Sun played solidly in the first half, taking a 7-3 lead at intermission when Maggie Palfi scored just before the horn. "They were talking on attack," Guethler said. "They weren't forcing things. Toward the end of the game, the pressure becomes really intense for some players. It's really hard to kind of take a step back and just play your own game. I get that. The crowd's cheering. I'm yelling. All that stuff. However, on attack in the first half, they were very relaxed. They were passing it around. They were making great cuts and great passes, great feeds. Obviously, the score [at halftime] reflected that." Heather Amos collected three goals and two assists for the Tigers. Zatalava finished with two goals and four assists. Palfi, Logan Alexander, Emily Fanning, Jasmyne Moore, and Jess Borchardt each added a goal. GallerySlideshowComments are closed.
