Chesapeake City and host North East entered the week as the two undefeated teams remaining in the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division baseball tournament. Losers bracket
Elkton 3, Perryville 0 Gary Slagle (two innings) and Sean Ferrell (four innings) combined for a shutout to enable Elkton to stay alive with a win Saturday afternoon. Ty Patchell had both Perryville hits including a line single to center to lead off the top of the sixth with his team trailing 3-0. Jake Berg, who was saddled with the loss despite pitching well, reached on an error to bring the potential tying run to the plate with nobody out. Ferrell fanned the next two hitters. Hayden Kenney clubbed a long foul ball on the first pitch he saw then fought back from 0-2 to a full count before striking out to end the game. Elkton took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second. Jackson Lewis reached on an infield single to short and moved to third on a couple wild pitches. Ferrell drew a walk and rounded the first base bag and headed for second. The throw was high and caromed off the shortstop's glove into center field allowing Lewis to score. Ferrell advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Sam Jones' single through the hole. Elkton added a run in the fifth. With one out, Jamie LaManna singled to right and went to second on an error. He scored on a pair of wild pitches with two outs. Rising Sun 14, Havre de Grace 5 Rising Sun tallied five times in the top of the first on the way to a win Saturday morning. Luke Trout led off the game with a walk and scooted to third on a Ben Adams bouncing single to right. Layne Hull followed with an RBI single to left. Dillon Goodwin walked to load the bases and John Mettee mashed a two-run double to right to make it 3-0. Goodwin was thrown out at the plate. Grey Willis plated Mettee with a triple to right and scored when Gavin Patterson smacked a two-out single to center. Havre de Grace countered with two in the home half on a two-run homer to center by Luis Utrera. Rising Sun responded with two more in the second. With two outs and nobody on base, Hull singled to right-center and Goodwin's double on a hard grounder up the middle put runners on second and third. Bradley Dietz then belted a two-run double off the base of the center field fence. Havre de Grace got a run in the second on an RBi single by Aaron Santiago before Rising Sun's Jack Henderson singled to plate Colby Wiggins in the top of the third. Ahead 8-4, Rising Sun broke the game open with six runs in the fifth. Henderson, Trout, and Hull each delivered an RBI single before Goodwin clubbed a three-run homer. Trout earned the victory and Adams closed it out. Second round North East 11, Havre de Grace 3 Winning pitcher Evan England had two hits and scored three runs. Landon Knaub recorded a hit and also scored three times. Chesapeake City 13, Elkton 1 (4 innings) Deaven Jones went the distance and hit a two-run homer. Chesapeake City scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take command. Jones got things started with an infield hit and eventually scored on an error on a fly ball off the bat of Michael Preske. Truman Auwerda had an RBI single to center to make it 2-0 and wound up scoring on an error. Mike Downes delivered an RBI triple off the center field fence and scored on Chris Harris' groundout. Matt Cooper led off the second with a single and Jones followed with a blast over the center field fence. Jacob Titter added a two-run single later in the frame. Chesapeake City tacked on four more in the third to go up 13-0 before Elkton scored its lone run in the fourth. First round Havre de Grace 16, Perryville 3 Luis Utrera hit a grand slam in the fourth as Havre de Grace scored four times to snap a 3-3 tie. Havre de Grace broke the game wide open with nine runs in the sixth. Havre de Grace had taken a 3-0 lead in the first. Frank Rogers belted a two-run double over the head of the left fielder. Perryville answered with two runs in the home half on an error on a ball off the bat of Hayden Kenney. Perryville tied it in the second on a clutch two-out RBI single by Jake Berg. Chesapeake City 11, Rising Sun 0 (4 innings) Click HERE for photos of this game. Truman Auwerde did not allow a hit and recorded 10 strikeouts. The other two outs came on comebackers. Auwerde gave up a leadoff walk to Luke Trout before retiring the final 12 Rising Sun hitters. Chesapeake City took the lead with a run in the top of the second. Jake Vaughn led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Chris Harris doubled on a hard grounder that scooted past the shortstop and rolled all the way to the fence. Deaven Jones started the third with a double that bounced over the center field fence. He eventually scored on Michael Preske's groundout. Chesapeake City exploded for nine runs in the fourth. Nate Fleming drilled a two-run triple into the left-center gap to make it 5-0. Preske followed with an RBI single. Mike Downes delivered a two-run double the rough the hole.
