The Cecil Skipjacks baseball team won the state Babe Ruth championship for the second straight season and third time in five years. "I'm proud of these boys and the heart they showed capturing the state title," manager Jim Martz said. Cecil clinched the 16-18 title by beating Francis Scott Key 7-3 Sunday afternoon. Chris Roosevelt tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowed just one earned run. David Jackson belted a two-run homer to key the Skipjacks' offense. He was 2 for 3 with three RBIs on the day. Noah Juergens went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Brennan Martz had a hit and scored a run. Roosevelt and Jake Keane both scored a run. Jared Brustman scored a run. Roosevelt retired FSK in order in the seventh with Aaron Richardson catching a foul popup to end the game. Cecil topped host Winfield 6-0 Saturday afternoon behind a masterful performance by Jackson. He gave up just two hits and one walk. "He kept the 3-4-5 hitters off balance mixing his fastball, change-up combo beautifully," Jim Martz said. "Great defensive play behind him in the outfield by Justin Frey, Martz and Owen Null and two double plays from the Roosevelt and Zach Van Dyke combo set the tone. No runner ever reached third base." Jackson also went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Roosevelt's two-run single fueled a four-run fourth inning for Cecil. Dustin Krahn, Jackson, Frey and Roosevelt all scored in the frame. Richardson was 2-4 with an RBI. Krahn contributed two hits and Van Dyke delivered a hit and an RBI. Mike Moran and Martz both scored a run. Cecil routed Frederick 10-2 in the opener Friday night. The winning pitcher Roosevelt yielded no runs and two hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work. Dustin Krahn fanned three in three innings. Krahn was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Frey had two hits including a triple and drove in a pair of runs. Null knocked in two runs. Cecil got up early with four in the first and never was threatened. "Not enough can be said for the performance of our pitching staff this weekend," Jim Martz said. "Chris Roosevelt, after a very efficient four innings on Friday, was strong in the championship game. “David Jackson's performance Saturday was top notch. He had command of all his pitches, hit his spots, and allowed his defense to help him along the way by inducing weak fly balls and groundouts. The offense was in high gear, with many players contributing with timely hits. David Jackson was a threat in every plate appearance and drove the ball exceptionally well this weekend." The Skipjacks will compete in the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament July 22-26 in Pine Forge, Pa. The state champion Cecil Skipjacks. Bottom (l-r): Noah Juergens and Chris Roosevelt.
