The Perryville football team's losing streak reached four with a 32-28 loss to host Aberdeen Friday night. Trailing 32-22 with 7:55 left, the Panthers got within four on a two-yard plunge by quarterback Cam Cunningham with 6:37 remaining. Cunningham tried to run for the two-point conversion but was stopped short. Perryville got a huge break on the ensuing possession when Aberdeen faked a punt but a pass was dropped by a wide-open receiver. That gave the Panthers the ball on the Aberdeen 39 with 4:57 remaining. Cunningham threw incomplete on first down and was sacked for a two-yard loss on second down. Cunningham rushed for no gain on 3rd and 12 and was sacked again on fourth down.
The Eagles got a couple of first downs to run out the clock. Perryville led by as many as nine points in the first half. Kyle Savick's three-yard run put the Panthers ahead 6-0 less than three minutes into the game. The drive was highlighted by a 62-yard run by Ethan Griffin. Aberdeen answered early in the second quarter when Ken Shea McCraney galloped 42 yards for a score on 4th and five. The PAT was missed leaving the score tied at 6. Following a Perryville turnover, Eagles' quarterback Lavell McCullers tossed a 15-yard scoring strike to Tavaughn Coleman to grab a 13-6 lead. The Panthers committed another turnover but Griffin got the ball right back with a leaping interception at his own 11. The Panthers then embarked on an 89-yard TD march with Griffin gaining 21 on a pass from Cunningham and a total of 61 yards on the ground, including the final 12 for a score. Cunningham threw to Griffin for the two-point conversion to put Perryville ahead 14-13. With 1:15 left in the half Donnell Whittington forced a fumble which was recovered by Savick. Elijah Johnson hauled in a 43-yard TD pass from Cunningham down the right sideline and Griffin's two-point conversion extended Perryville's lead to 22-13 with 47 seconds remaining in the half. Aberdeen then scored two touchdowns in 12 seconds of game time although it took half an hour to do so. The Eagles scored with two seconds left in the half when McCullers recovered after fumbling a shotgun snap and found Coleman all alone over the middle for a 29-yard TD pass. The two-point pass attempt was incomplete. After Aberdeen's Homecoming festivities, Nate McKinney returned the second half kickoff 65 yards for a TD to give the Eagles a 25-22 edge just 10 seconds into the third quarter. Playing without injured starting kicker Josh Bargsten, Perryville missed a potential game-tying 31-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. The Panthers had a 4th and 6 on the Aberdeen seven yard line to start the fourth quarter but Griffin was tackled at the five after taking a shovel pass. McCraney gained 26 yards on a 4th and 7 and McCullers scored from a yard out with 7:55 left in the contest. The PAT made the score 32-22. Comments are closed.
