The Cecil Soccer League is celebrating a special anniversary this Saturday. The league is holding its 20th annual Chesapeake Cup. There will be 62 teams playing at the CSL complex, Chesland Park, 401 Elk Forest Road, Elkton. A small celebration ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m.. Past tournament directors have been invited back for the ceremony. The CSL is giving teams playing a game ball with the league logo and the tournament logo on the ball. Each player will receive a patch with the tournament logo on it. The first Cup was held Saturday April 6, 1996. The idea behind sponsoring a travel team tournament was to raise funds to help Cecil Soccer acquire their own fields. It was to be a one-day tournament always held the Saturday of Easter Weekend. When the tournament was first devised it was for boys teams only U-9 through U-14. That first tournament when held had 24 teams playing a three-game round robin. Then in 1999 at the 4th Annual Chesapeake Cup, the tournament was opened up to both boys and girls teams U-9 through U-14. In 2003 at the 8th annual event, it was expanded the age groups for both boys and girls from U-9 through U-16. Over the years, there has been teams as old as U-19 in the tournament. The tournament has had as little as 24 teams in 1996 up to 112 teams in 2008. The tournament has been played at many venues over the years. In 2007 at the 12th Annual Chesapeake Cup, games were played at Cecil Soccer’s new home, Chesland Park. Since the start of the tournament in 1996 there are only two committee members that have been involved in all 20 tournaments – Joe Tanner who started with Cecil Soccer in the fall of 1986 and current tournament director Jeff Privett ,who started with Cecil Soccer in the fall of 1988.
