The Solanco JV softball team recorded three more lopsided victories.
Kaitlyn Borcky tossed a no-hitter as the Mules (6-0) downed Penn Manor 17-3 in five innings Friday. Borcky struck out six and walked five. The Solanco softball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday. Host Penn Manor downed the Mules 3-2. "They have a quality pitcher and she makes a big difference," Solanco coach Brett Miller said. Comets freshman Brittany Hook limited the Mules to five hits, three of which came in the seventh inning. Down 3-0, Solanco rallied in its final at bat.
The Solanco baseball team worked its way back into the section race by winning two of three games last week.
The Mules downed Lampeter-Strasburg and Garden Spot before falling to Penn Manor Friday. The Comets downed Solanco 10-3. "We kind of ran out of gas a little bit," coach Tom Fish said. "We were happy to win the first two games of the week and get back in the section. Fridays are a little bit of a challenge for us right now." The Mules, who have stressed putting the ball in play, only struck out twice but managed just two hits. "We're going to have to make some adjustments and try to drive the ball a little bit more," Fish said. The Solanco JV softball team opened the season by outscoring its first three opponents by a combined 65-10.
The Mules topped rival Elizabethtown 18-3 in three innings last Thursday. Allison McDowell earned the win with help from her defense. Solanco's offense produced 16 hits. "It was another game where we did an outstanding job at the plate and attacking the ball," coach Chad McDowell said. "Right now we are really seeing the ball well." The Solanco boys and girls track and field teams each improved to 2-0 with wins over host Elizabethtown Monday, March 30.
"Despite the wind, both teams were able to earn wins," coach Ivan Haines said. "Both teams performed well with many personal bests even in the cold." The boys prevailed 107-39 highlighted by a record-tying performance by Billy Cooney. The Solanco baseball team won one of three games last week.
The Mules lost to Elizabethtown and Ephrata sandwiched around a victory over Conestoga Valley. E-town topped Solanco 9-4 last Thursday. "We tried a couple guys on the mound," coach Tom Fish said. "We struggled a little early and a little late. I was happy with how we fought back in the middle." Down 6-0, the Mules tallied four times in the fifth keyed by three straight RBI hits. Joe Murray delivered an RBI double followed by an RBI single by Dawson Gote and RBI double off the bat of Taggart Hess. All wins are not the same.
The Solanco softball team opened the season with three victories but Friday's 6-3 triumph over visiting Elizabethtown stood above the others. Except for a rare interloper, the Mules and Bears annually battle for the top spot in Section Two. This season, Solanco has the early edge. "It was a big win," Mules coach Brett Miller said. "All wins are important but some wins are more important than others." Junior Kalyn Burger tossed a complete game in just her second varsity start. She fanned one and allowed five hits and five walks. "The walks are uncharacteristic," said Miller. "She has good enough pitch command but we were searching for the strike zone." |
