Jake Moore has witnessed some pretty amazing things during his stint as coach of the Perryville cross country and track and field teams.
He's experiencing another one this fall. The Panthers have 51 athletes on the cross country squad, 31 boys and 20 girls. "I've never seen numbers like this," he said. NEW-LOOK PERRYVILLE BOYS EYE SIMILAR RESULTS
The Perryville boys soccer team won't look the same but is hoping to produce similar results. While the Panthers did lose the three players who accounted for the bulk of the scoring last year, Perryville returns a long list of talented players. "It's quite a different look," coach George Reynolds said. "We have a good nucleus and a lot of young players. We're going to need them to step into different roles than they had last year. It's going to take a little while." The Rising Sun field hockey team is poised to bounce back from a disappointing two-win season.
Sent down to the Susquehanna (lower) Division, the Tigers will certainly win more games and coach Julie Eller is confident her team will put a better product on the field. "I expect we'll be competitive in every game," she said. "There's a positive attitude all the way around." When he was hired to coach the Rising Sun High School football team, Rich Opp recounted a story that led him to step down from an assistant coaching position with the Tigers more than 14 years ago. Opp vividly recalled how heartbreaking it was to see his son, Luke, waving goodbye as Opp pulled out of the driveway to head to a game. It prompted Rich Opp to get out of coaching, but the Rising Sun High teacher returned recently to coach the JV squad and then was chosen to replace Clem Vaughan as varsity coach. The Perryville field hockey team has some holes to fill but has players capable of filling the voids. The Panthers graduated center midfielder Hannah Wein and its entire defense. Merve Akbay is taking over in the middle and Taylor Poore and Lydia Hill return in the midfield. Defender Kaitlyn Griffin has been impressive in the preaseason, as have Destiny Parker, and Caitlin McCann. Freshmen Ashley Meekins and Emily Phillips. |
