Special to The Herald Visiting North East triumphed over Perryville Wednesday, winning via criteria tiebreaker to thwart a late comeback attempt by the Panthers. The North East boys basketball team got it done in the fourth quarter for the second straight game.
Trailing by a point with three minutes to go, the Indians embarked on a 9-0 run and went on to defeat visiting Havre de Grace 63-56 Wednesday night, January 3. Courtney Hardy's career game helped the Elkton girls basketball team top Tome 61-47 Wednesday afternoon, January 3. Hardy poured in 32 points to power the Elks to the victory. It is the most points Hardy has scored at any level, surpassing her previous best of 24 in an AAU contest. She knew early it was going to be a big night. "I really started off the game on a hot streak," Hardy said. "I started out with a bunch of points and once I start scoring I get my energy up and then I try to keep scoring. Usually I don't score until the second quarter and start off slow but when I started scoring at the very beginning of the first quarter I try to keep going." Ever sit in the stands at a Little League game and feel certain you could do a better job than the umpires?
Here's your chance to show it. Little League Maryland District 5 (Rising Sun, Elkton, Chesapeake City, North East, Perryville, and Havre de Grace) is sponsoring free classes for new and inexperienced umpires. The clinics will be held Sunday evenings beginning January 7. Classes for youth 18 and under are from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with adult classes from 8-10 p.m. Photos from the title games of the 21st annual Cecil College Green -n- Gold Boys & Girls High School Holiday Basketball Tournament.
