“In Quarryville, we know what Memorial Day is. In Quarryville, we don’t forget.”
That’s how organizer and Vietnam War veteran Ron Fichtner opened the sixth annual commemoration of the holiday on Monday morning, May 27.
The ceremony attracted several hundred people to the restored memorial pillars that flank the entrance to Quarryville’s Memorial Park.
Featured speakers Raif Groves, a Solanco middle school student, and Lt. Col. Philip Z. Atkinson, a Solanco graduate and active officer with the U.S. Air Force, each spoke of men who died in the Korean War.
Lt. Col. Atkinson spoke of an Air Force crew member, a man who served in bombers much more primitive than the ones he knows. Quarryville native Technical Sergeant Quinton Newswanger, a World War II veteran who was recalled to active duty in Korean War and who died when his bomber was hit during a raid on a North Korean air field in October, 1951.
“Tech Sergeant Newswanger, Quarryville remembers you.”
